Distribution strategies for Documentaries

Seminar on making outreach and distribution strategies by Ove Rishøj at Aarhus Filmworkshop on June 7th from 16-18

Distribution of documentaries has developed with a wealth of great new opportunities during the last decade. Cinema on demand, crowd funding, OTT operators, VOD, educational cinema release, and many other options are in play, when bringing your next documentary to different target groups. However, the many new opportunities also bring an increased complexity to making effective launch strategies and carrying out distribution plans. During this seminar you will be introduced to a method for your next distribution strategy. You will get inspired and be empowered to make better plans for the release of your next film.

EDN, European Documentary Network is a global network for professionals working with documentary film and TV. EDN started in September 1996 as a documentary organisation for filmmakers, producers, production companies, distributors, associations, film institutions & boards, universities, festivals, broadcasters and film & television agencies.
Around 1000 members from more than 60 countries have joined EDN. Our organisation is open for both newcomers and established filmmakers from around the world.  www.edn.dk

EDN provides documentary consulting and informs about possibilities for funding, financing, development, co-production, distribution and collaboration across borders. This is done via individual consultancy to members on documentary projects, activities like workshops, seminars and conferences as well as through the two indispensable resource publications The EDN Financing Guide & The EDN Co-production Guide.

Ove Rishøj Jensen works as a Film & Media Consultant at EDN. Ove has been with EDN since Winter 2003 and is in charge of running workshops, pitching forums and seminars in both online and offline versions.

Ove has programmed and/or produced a number of events like Docs in Thessaloniki, The EDN Pitch Pilot Workshop, New Platforms – New Politics, Twelve for the Future and lately also EDN’s market activities at European Film Market, Sunny Side of the Doc and MIPDOC. In addition he has collaborated with a number of documentary organisations and festivals on tailor made master classes, seminars and workshops for special events and occasions. This includes the IDFA DocLab in The Netherlands, DOX in Vitro in Slovakia, RealYoung in Sweden and NFI:LAB Junior DOK in Norway.

From 2004 to early 2015 Ove was also in charge of the EDN web site, heading the process of building a platform, where a network as geographical divided as EDN’s, can have a meeting place for collaboration and information sharing. This has resulted in formats like EDN Online Master Classes, where leading documentary figures share their knowledge about filmmaking, and EDN Online Sessions, where important financiers are introduced and their financing possibilities presented. Latest format is The EDN Online Pitching Session, where documentary projects with a specific thematic focus are pitching to a selected group of financiers via an online videoconference system.

Ove Rishøj Jensen holds a master degree in film studies with additional studying of cultural journalism and humanistic computer informatics. Besides working for EDN Ove has briefly worked for Filmkontakt Nord. Alongside working for EDN, Ove is working for the Swedish production company Auto Images as Outreach Producer and is a board member of the Nordic documentary screening initiative Doc Lounge.

The seminar on making outreach and distribution strategies is supported by The Nordea Fond. It will take place at Aarhus Filmworkshop on June 7th from 16-18. Seats are limited, so please sign up for the seminar here.
